Benzene Awareness
Exposures to benzene are addressed in specific standards for general industry, shipyard employment, and the construction industry. OSHA’s Benzene standard is reflected in CFR 1910.1028, toxic and hazardous substances. Benzene (C6H6) (CAS Registry No. 71-43-2) means liquefied or gaseous benzene. It includes benzene contained in liquid mixtures and the benzene vapors released by these liquids. It does not include trace amounts of unreacted benzene contained in solid materials. A benzene emergency means any occurrence such as, but not limited to, equipment failure, rupture of containers, or failure of control equipment which may or does result in an unexpected significant release of benzene.  Respiratory protection programs must be implemented in accordance with § 1910.134(b) through (d) (except (d)(1)(iii), (d)(3)(iii)(b)(1) and (2)), and (f) through (m), which covers each employee required by this section to use a respirator. Benzene training is an initial training and annually after any incident.

After successfully completing the Benzene awareness course, employees will have a competent understanding of the following:

• Competent understanding of OSHA’s Benzene standard
• Communication of benzene hazards
• Storage, transportation, distribution, dispensing, sale or use of gasoline, motor fuels, or other fuels containing benzene
• Respirator usage
• Exposure measurements
• And MORE!
