Hazmat (DOT)

This course is intended for hazmat employees in the transportation industry. Hazmat employees- that is, anyone who is employed by a hazmat employer and directly affects hazmat transportation safety. This course will help learners gain a competent understanding of the various Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) to help them work safely around hazmat. This course satisfies the General Awareness training requirement 49 CFR §172.704(a)(1). This course falls within OSHA, NFPA, EPA and DOT regulatory bodies.

After successfully completing this course, employees will have a competent understanding of the following:

• Identify the required training all hazmat employees must receive
• Determine if a material is a hazmat and verify its hazard classification using the Hazardous Materials Regulations
• Recognize and identify hazmat through the proper usage of shipping papers, markings, labels, and placards
• Determining a Hazmat – Definition of hazmat, hazard of the material, Hazard classifications, other pertinent criteria and the hazmat table
• Ways to Communicate the Hazard - Communicating hazards (Hazcom – Hazardous communication), shipping papers, markings, proper labeling, and emergency response information
• 49 CFR 172.704(d) of the HMR requires each hazmat employer to create and retain a record certifying the current training of each hazmat employee
